With so many people going gaga over Facebook, you might be wondering what the disadvantages are to having a Facebook account. Here is a rundown of the darker side of Facebook:
Lack of customization. Every single Facebook profile you see will look pretty much like all the rest. There's only so much you can do to sup up your profile page. You can't change the background color or make it an image. You can't add your favorite song so that it plays for your visitors to your profile page. You can't add any external images to your profile page, or to your comments. It's all very cookie cutter and bare bones. It's a wonder people haven't demanded that Facebook be more customizable, and that so many millions of people are satisfied with a blue and white them with no bells and whistles.
Broad range of people. Now that there are more people with a Facebook account than people without one it seems that there might be too many people on there. You'll have to figure out how you can balance your personal life with your business contacts, your aunt Helga, your grandmother, and your drinking buddies. In life we all wear a lot of different hats, but with Facebook you have to have them all on at the same time. It's possible to set up your privacy settings so that you can exclude some people from certain posts and pictures, but it can require a degree in nuclear physics just to figure it all out.
Targeted ads. You will see advertisements that are laser targeted to the things that you profess an interest in. If you post in an update that you will be going canoeing this weekend, you can expect to see some wilderness ads, and potentially an ad for a canoe. If you also mention where you'll be going canoeing you'll also see an ad for hotels and travel discounts to get you to your location. While these may provide useful at time, many times they are repetitive and annoying and it can be a little unsettling knowing that your private posts are being dissected and used to get you to buy things.
Less time in the real world. If you get swept up in the world of Facebook, the real world might start to seem like the times that happen between Facebook sessions. Facebook is a mirror of real life and if it is used too much becomes a sort of second life for some people. If you have a tendency to be a voyeur you might catch yourself spending hours on Facebook scanning through people's photo albums and reading their posts to get an idea of what their life is like. Meanwhile, you should be spending that time living a full and active life away from the computer!
